Jefferson Barracks, one of the National Cemetery Administrations oldest interment sites, has served as a burial place soldiers from all wars. The original military post was built south of St. Louis, Mo., on the banks of the Mississippi River to replace Fort Bellefontaine. Selected for its strategic geographic location, the post was opened in 1826. Jefferson Barracks became the armys first permanent base west of the Mississippi River. By the 1840s, it was the largest military establishment in the United States. During the Civil War, Jefferson Barracks served as a training post for the Union Army. There was also a hospital at the post for the Union armys sick and wounded.

I am a veteran and spent two of my college summers cleaning, mowing and aligning markers at the national cemetery here in Chattanooga. The respect one gets after reading each name several times is unbelievable. Each day I would hear the seven guns saluting another lost veteran as they were placed gently in the ground. You never understand how many there are until you live it each day. I appreciate your post and hope that all keep their memory close! God Bless all our VETERANS and YOU for posting this!! With out thought, a favorite always!!! Steven

Extremely moving image Peggy and I to believe you and the deer were meant to met that day because your dad loves you and the baby deer, so the Lord brought you and the deer for a special visit! When I read your story the hair on the back of my neck stood up! V

A peaceful image Peggy. Probably nothing could symbolize more the sacrifices our heroes and veterans have made for us then to see a child of nature looking so sad but peaceful in the shadows of their headstones.

What a sweet, sensitive capture, and an even sweeter dedication to your dad. I don't believe in coincidence, so I believe it is not just by chance this beautiful deer was right there. vf
